A dog raincoat with the harness built in
A raincoat with a built-in harness has the harness sewn into the coat itself, so you clip the leash to the jacket and go. No harness underneath, no cutting a hole in the back for a ring, and no wet harness to peel off after the walk. Our All-Weather Jacket is built this way, and this page is the plain version of what it is and is not.
Why the leash on the jacket is a good idea
When the leash is attached to a collar, every tug lands on the neck. When it is attached to a harness, the pull sits on the chest. The built-in version does the same job as a separate harness for an ordinary walk, with one less thing to put on in the hallway while the dog spins in circles.
The catch is that it is a jacket first. It is made for everyday walks with a dog that walks nicely. A dog that lunges at squirrels with their whole body should walk in their regular harness, worn under the jacket. The product page says the same thing.
What the jacket is made of
- A rain-shedding outer shell. Rain beads and runs off on a normal walk. It is not a dive suit, and a long soak in heavy rain will eventually get through at the seams, like every soft-shell dog coat.
- A warm lining, so it works as a winter coat too, not only a rain layer. On a mild wet day it can be a little warm for a thick-coated dog; on a cold wet day it is exactly right.
- A zip up the chest. The jacket opens flat, the dog steps in, and you zip from the tail up. No pulling anything over the head, which matters for dogs who hate that.
- Reflective piping along the seams for early mornings and late walks.
- A small round sport patch on the chest, in case you prefer a plain coat and want to know in advance.
- Colours: Army Green, Navy and Black.
Sizes, from Chihuahua to Lab
Eight sizes, XS to 4XL. The chest girth decides the size because the harness sits there and needs to be snug.
| Size | Chest | Neck | Back length |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 13.4 in | 10.4 in | 10.0 in |
| S | 15.0 in | 11.4 in | 10.8 in |
| M | 18.9 in | 13.0 in | 11.6 in |
| L | 22.8 in | 15.4 in | 13.6 in |
| XL | 26.8 in | 17.5 in | 15.7 in |
| 2XL | 30.7 in | 19.5 in | 17.5 in |
| 3XL | 34.3 in | 21.1 in | 19.5 in |
| 4XL | 38.2 in | 22.8 in | 20.9 in |
Measurements are taken by hand and can vary by an inch or two. Between sizes, go up: the chest zip and the cut leave room for a layer underneath. If you have not measured before, how to measure your dog for a coat takes two minutes.
Back length is short compared with the chest. That is deliberate. A harness jacket needs to be free of the hind legs so the dog can stretch, pee and sit without the hem bunching, so it ends before the tail. If you want a coat that covers the whole back, this is not that coat.
Looking after it
Wipe it clean after a muddy walk, or hand wash cold and hang it to dry. Skip the dryer.
Shipping and trying it on
Free US shipping on every order. Orders ship in 1 to 2 business days and usually arrive 4 to 9 business days after that. You have 60 days to try it; if it does not fit, send it back for a full refund, as described on the Shipping & Returns page.
For cold, wet weeks it pairs with the Fireside Cable-Knit underneath, sold together as the Fall Set for less than the two apart.
Questions
Can my dog wear a harness under it as well?
Yes, and for strong pullers that is what we recommend: your regular harness under the jacket, with the leash clipped to the harness.
Is the built-in harness enough for a big dog?
For a dog that walks politely, yes, at any size up to 4XL. For a dog that pulls hard, the honest answer is a separate harness under the jacket, whatever their size.
Does it have a hood?
No. The zip runs up the chest to the neck and the head stays free.
