Sizes by breed
One page per breed (or per pair of breeds that are built alike): the breed's typical chest, neck and back measurements with their sources, which of our sizes those measurements land on, what the shape does to the fit, and what is worth buying. Every page ends the same way: measure your dog, because no breed chart knows your dog.
How to take the three measurements
Toy, under 10 lb

- Maltese, Maltipoo
A Maltese is under 7 lb with a 12 to 15 in chest and a white single coat that shows every mark. A Maltipoo can be twice that. Which Tilt & Tail sizes fit each, and why the trench is the Maltese coat.
- Miniature pinscher

- Pomeranian
A 3 to 7 lb dog that measures like a 10 lb one because of the coat. How to size a Pomeranian for a Tilt & Tail knit, trench or jacket from our charts, and when a Pom needs a coat at all.

- French bulldog
A Frenchie's barrel chest and thick neck decide the size, not the weight. Which Tilt & Tail jacket, vest and knit sizes fit a French bulldog, with the chart numbers.

- Jack Russell terrier, Parson Russell terrier
A 9 to 17 lb terrier that is all engine, with a 15 to 20 in chest, a smooth or rough coat and no interest in standing still for a tape measure. Which Tilt & Tail jacket, knit and vest sizes fit a Jack Russell or Parson Russell, from our charts.
- Mini goldendoodle, Cockapoo, Mini labradoodle, Cavapoo

- Shetland sheepdog
A Sheltie's coat is the whole point and the whole problem: a long, dense double coat that handles cold on its own and takes an afternoon to dry. Which Tilt & Tail jacket and vest sizes fit a 15 to 25 lb Sheltie over that coat, from our charts.
- Shiba Inu
A 17 to 23 lb dog with a 19 to 24 in chest, a thick double coat that laughs at cold and a famous dislike of being handled. Which Tilt & Tail jacket and vest sizes fit a Shiba, from our charts, and why a sweater is the wrong buy.
- Shih Tzu, Lhasa apso
Two long-coated, flat-faced small dogs with the same fitting problems: a 14 to 19 in chest under a lot of hair, and a pullover that has to pass a short muzzle. Which Tilt & Tail sizes fit each, from our charts.
Medium, 25 to 50 lb

- Italian greyhound, Whippet, Greyhound
Three sizes of the same shape, a deep chest, a tucked waist, a thin coat and almost no fat, which is why sighthounds shiver and why most coats fit them badly. Which Tilt & Tail sizes fit each, from our charts, and what to leave on the shelf.
- Pit bull, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier
Short coat, big chest, thick neck, no fat, and a dog that feels the cold more than its reputation suggests. Which Tilt & Tail jacket and vest sizes fit a 30 to 70 lb pit bull, American Staffordshire or Staffordshire bull terrier, from our charts.
Large, 50 lb and up

- German shepherd
A German shepherd is long, deep and at the very top of our chart; many males are past it. Which Tilt & Tail jacket and vest sizes fit a 50 to 90 lb shepherd with a 28 to 36 in chest, from our charts, and the honest limits.
- Golden retriever

- Labrador retriever
The most popular dog in the US, at the top of our size range. Which Tilt & Tail jacket and vest sizes fit a 55 to 80 lb Labrador with a 29 to 36 in chest, from our charts, why a Lab's coat needs no help with cold, and when it needs help with wet.

- Vizsla, Weimaraner
Two pointing breeds with the thinnest coats of any large dog, a deep chest and a tucked waist, which are cold in weather a spaniel shrugs off. Which Tilt & Tail jacket and vest sizes fit a 45 to 90 lb vizsla or Weimaraner, from our charts.
Breeds we do not fit
Our biggest jacket is a 38.2 in chest and the vest ends at 37 in. These breeds are past that on most adults (chest and neck ranges from the TARIGS and Doggie Style Store breed charts), so there is no page and no point ordering to check:
- Great Dane: chest 37 to 41 in.
- Bernese mountain dog: chest 37 to 41 in, under a coat that does the job.
- Newfoundland: chest 41 to 45 in.
- Saint Bernard: chest 41 to 45 in.
- Mastiff: chest 37 to 41 in, neck 26 to 31 in.
- Rottweiler: chest 37 to 41 in.
- Irish wolfhound, Leonberger: chest 41 to 45 in.
- Great Pyrenees, Alaskan malamute: 75 lb and up under a double coat; the charts put the neck alone at 22 to 30 in.
Fitted in part: German shepherds, Dobermans, Weimaraners, and the biggest Labradors and goldens. The smaller dogs of those breeds fit the 3XL and 4XL jacket and the XL vest; the biggest males are past them, and each breed's page says where the line is.
A breed that is not listed anywhere here is usually one we have not written up yet, not one we cannot fit: a dog with a chest between 10 and 38 in has a size on at least one chart.
