Poodle coat and sweater sizes, toy to standard

The AKC counts the poodle as one breed in three sizes, divided only by height: toy up to 10 in at the shoulder, miniature 10 to 15, standard over 15 (AKC standard). Weight runs from 4 lb to 70. What they share is the coat, a dense, curly, single coat that does not shed, grows until it is cut, and behaves exactly like a sponge in the rain. The sizes are three different problems; the coat is one.

Toy poodles: up to 10 in tall, 4 to 6 lb by the standard and often 7 to 9 as pets. Chest 12 to 14 in (DogChart), 14 in (Doggie Style Store); neck 8 to 14 in (Doggie Style Store), 25 to 35 cm (TARIGS); back 9 to 11 in (DogChart). The Fireside M or L is the knit for this size, sleeveless, so the curls are not combed backwards by a cuff. The trench, by neck and weight, fits every toy poodle. The jacket XS (13.4 in) is a close fit on a 13 in chest and loose on a 12.

Standards: over 15 in, in practice 22 to 27, and 40 to 70 lb (females 40 to 50, males 60 to 70). Chest 24 in (Doggie Style Store), with the bigger males at 28 to 30; neck 12 to 18 in (Doggie Style Store); back 20 to 25 in. Jacket XL (26.8 in) to 2XL (30.7); vest L (24 to 31 in). The knits stop at 24.4 in around the chest and fit only a small female, and a standard poodle in a proper winter coat does not need one.

The coat decides the piece

A poodle's coat does one thing well, which is keep growing, and one thing badly, which is dry. Soaked, it holds water next to the skin and mats where it is rubbed, behind the elbows and under a collar. Two consequences:

The rain shell is the piece for every size. The All-Weather Jacket keeps the back and sides dry, opens flat and zips up the chest, so nothing is dragged over a topknot, and the leash clips to the built-in harness. The Quilted Vest does the drizzle version from a 16 in chest up, and its belly strap takes up the difference between a fresh clip and a grown-out one.
Knits go on for the walk and come off at the door. A sweater worn all day on a curly coat is a mat by evening, and a mat on a poodle is a shave.

Whether the dog needs warmth depends on the clip, not the size. In a long coat, no poodle of any size needs a sweater outdoors in ordinary cold. In a short summer clip, a toy or mini in November is a cold dog, and the Fireside or the Heritage is right for the walk.

A poodle measures differently every six weeks. A toy in a full coat tapes 15 in; the same dog clipped, 12. Measure the week you order, in the coat it will be in for the season, and err up: every piece here either zips, straps or stretches.

Measure the chest; after a groom it is probably 15 to 16 in, which is the L (15.0) or XL (16.5). When the coat grows out, the XL will still fit and the L will not. XL.
