Siberian husky rain jacket sizes

Let us be straightforward: a Siberian husky in a winter coat is a dog that is warmer than you are. The double coat was built for Siberian sled work at temperatures that stop cars. A sweater on a husky is a prank, and a lined jacket in ordinary cold is a dog overheating. The one weather a husky's coat handles badly is a long, soaking, above-freezing rain, when the undercoat loads up with water and stays damp for the rest of the day. That is the case for a shell, and only a shell.

Numbers

AKC standard: 20 to 23.5 in at the shoulder, 35 to 60 lb (females 35 to 50, males 45 to 60). Breed charts: chest 26 to 30 in (DogChart), 26 in (Doggie Style Store), 85 to 95 cm, 33 to 37 in (TARIGS, over a full coat); neck 16 to 22 in (Doggie Style Store), 45 to 50 cm, 18 to 20 in (TARIGS); back 20 to 22 in (DogChart), 60 to 70 cm, 24 to 28 in (TARIGS). Coat makers' charts of measured dogs, and on a husky the coat moves every number by 2 or 3 in between July and January. Measure in the season, over the coat as it lies.

A female after the spring blow at 26 in: jacket XL (26.8), vest L. A male in full coat at 31 or 32: jacket 2XL (30.7) is under, so 3XL (34.3); vest XL. The vest's range per size (L is 24 to 31 in, XL 30 to 37) is the reason it suits this breed: one size holds the coat change that would move the jacket a full size. The knits are not husky sizes and should not be.

The vest is the husky piece

The hem of each sits ahead of the tail; the plumed tail and the trousers on the hind legs come home wet whatever the dog wears, and a husky's trousers hold a remarkable amount of water.

Does my husky need a coat at all?

In cold, no. In a long rain above freezing, a shell keeps the undercoat dry and the afternoon short. That is the whole of it.

Vest L or XL for a 50 lb male?

Measure the chest over the coat. Up to 31 in, L; past it, XL. In full winter coat most males are XL.

Will the jacket make the dog overheat?

In ordinary cold, yes; it is lined. Save it for freezing rain and use the vest for the rest.
