Vizsla and Weimaraner coat sizes

The vizsla and the Weimaraner are the large dogs that genuinely need a coat. Both carry a short, smooth single coat with nothing underneath, over a lean, deep-chested body built to run all day in a Hungarian or German autumn, not to stand in an American one. Both shiver, both tuck up in cold rain, and both are the shape that makes coats float at the hem. The Weimaraner is the vizsla with 20 lb and 3 in added.

Jacket 2XL (30.7) on a female, 3XL (34.3) on most males; a 22 in neck is past the 3XL's 21.1 and makes it a 4XL. Vest L or XL. The biggest males, past 38 in around, are past the chart.

The shape

Deep chest, tucked waist: a shell sized to the chest hangs away from the belly at the back, which on these breeds is the bare, thin-skinned part that most needs cover. The Quilted Vest's wide belly strap pulls the hem in at the waist, and that is the best argument for it on this shape. The All-Weather Jacket is cut short at the back to free the hind legs and zips up the chest; on a long-bodied Weimaraner the hem sits well ahead of the tail, on a vizsla a little closer. Neither covers the whole back.

Why the lining is right here

On most big dogs the jacket's warm lining is more than they need. On a vizsla or Weimaraner it is the reason to buy it: a rain-shedding shell over a lining, on a dog with a coat that does nothing in the wet. For cold rain, sleet and the winter walk, the jacket; for cool drizzle, the vest without the lining; for a mild day, nothing, because these dogs also warm up fast when they run.

The leash

The jacket's harness is built in and the leash clips at the chest. On a pointing breed that walks steadily, that is one less thing. On a young vizsla that hits the end of the leash at a bird, the product page's advice: regular harness under the jacket, leash on that.

Questions

50 lb vizsla: XL or 2XL jacket?

Chest at its deepest. Under 26.8 in, XL; over, 2XL. Most males are 2XL.

Does the vest keep a Weimaraner warm?

It keeps the back dry and the wind off; it has no lining. In real cold the breed needs the jacket.

Is anything long enough for a Weimaraner's back?

No. Both pieces stop ahead of the tail by design. For full-length cover on a long-backed sporting dog, a coat made for that is the honest answer.
